Home Garden – Part 19 – of Tuesday Hometown Tourist

Views from the home garden

The Tuesday Hometown Tourist series has been about enjoying local places and people through the eyes of a tourist. This time my home garden is featured. I think of my garden qas a gift to the people who enjoy the colors and aromas when they pass by.

The perennials return each year at the same time. Here in the Midwest US, the deep purple crocus with their slim green leaves are the first to appear early March. Soon the pulmonaria (lungs wart) arrive. Each season there are more of these pink and blue flowers. They spread. Their leaves are also beautiful.

April brings the yellow daffodils. All of these early spring arrivals have to deal with some snow. They do thrive after being covered with snow. May brings a variety of colored tulips and the peonies. My peonies are magenta and yellow.

In June, the iris and lilies are here. The yucca flowers are tall and glorious at this time. Tiger lilies also appear. July brings white daisies, yellow daisies, and cone flowers. August and September bring gay feathers and bell flowers. Yellow yarrow also visits.

Concurrently, while all of these beautiful flowers are blooming, there are hostas, cosmos, lamb’s ears, sedum and ferns that last during the growing season. There are also two lilac bushes, two raspberry bushes, a rose bush, and a pink tamarack tree.

There is a vegetable and herb garden. Sun flowers are here for August and early fall. Marigolds (symbolic for Day of the dead ) are here from spring through November. A variety of annuals are in pots, baskets, and planted between the perennials.

Being with this growing garden is a privilege that keeps me feeling grateful for earth and nature. This time for my Tuesday Hometown Tourist feature, I chose to see home through the eyes of a tourist.
